bread 3-4 slices 3-4 slices
egg 2 2
milk ¾ cup + a little 200cc
sugar 1 Tbsp. 1 Tbsp.
cinnamon to taste to taste

That classic breakfast food straddling the line between country kitchen and elegant fare. This simple recipe is guaranteed to produce delicious results, particularly when paired with real maple syrup and a dusting of cinnamon.

Directions

  1. Mix egg, milk, and sugar well.
Mix the ingredients in a flat-bottomed bowl large enough to fit a slice of bread.
  2. Soak bread in mixture.
Place a slice of bread in the mixture and let it soak for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Fry bread.
Heat a frying pan. Melt a pat of butter, put the bread in, and put a lid on the frying pan. Let the bread fry, covered, on medium-low heat until it’s browned on the bottom, then remove lid, flip and let the other side brown uncovered.
  4. Serve immediately.
Put the bread on a plate, top with butter, maple syrup, and cinnamon to taste, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • The ingredients listed here assume somewhat dry bread, which makes better french toast; if you’re using fresh bread, use a few tablespoons less milk and don’t soak the bread as long.
  • Thicker slices of bread are probably better, if available.
